Title: Renner
MPA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Robert Rippberger
Starring: Frankie Muniz, Violett Beane, Marcia Gay Harden
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins

What It Is: Renner (Muniz) is a rather unique guy—an extremely socially awkward programmer who has developed an AI life coach to help him find love. When his neighbor down the hall, Jamie (Beane), strikes up a conversation, sparks fly, and he starts to believe there might be a chance for something between them. However, her brother Chad (Taylor Gray) might be a bit of a sociopath. But perhaps there’s more to Jamie than Renner realizes.

What We Think: There are certainly some things to like about this film. While it doesn’t do anything egregiously wrong, it also doesn’t showcase any exceptional skill. Robert Rippberger does his job behind the lens, and to his credit, he makes the predictable script work for him. Frankie Muniz delivers a really fun performance, and it’s great to see him putting in the effort. However, the film’s overall predictability is its biggest drawback. That said, it has a very cool aesthetic, and I don’t think the futuristic look of everything gets enough appreciation.

Our Grade: C-, By no means a failure it’s also not the best film we’ve seen in 2025. I will say this is worth a watch for those in the market for an easy thriller. Nothing edge of your seat worthy but enough to hold your attention. The acting and direction are solid enough and really elevate the material here. All that in spite of itself. I’m glad I got a shot to speak with Robert and Frankie about this project…which you can see below. If you want to check it out it’s on digital right now! So you should be able to rent it for a few bucks. So if you’re looking for a thriller with some teeth this is the one for you!
