Title: Kinda Pregnant
MPA Rating: R
Director: Tyler Spindel
Starring: Amy Schumer, Will Forte, Jillian Bell
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

What It Is: Ever since Laney (Schumer) was a little girl, she has dreamed of becoming a mother. But now, with her best friend Kate (Bell) pregnant—and seemingly every woman around her expecting—Laney, fresh off a breakup with her longtime boyfriend, finds herself feeling left behind. When she stumbles upon a fake baby bump, the attention it brings is too tempting to resist. As she befriends Megan (Brianne Howey) at a prenatal yoga class, her lie, like most lies, begins to spiral out of control. And things only get more complicated when Josh (Forte) enters the picture.

What We Think: I’m not a fan of Amy Schumer, but even I can admit when she’s good—like she was in Trainwreck. But that was almost a decade ago (which is giving me a slight existential crisis). Here, she’s just up to her usual unfunny antics. Will Forte, as he often is, is the saving grace of this dreck—charming, funny, and effortlessly likable. Jillian Bell, for her part, is also great.

I don’t know what it is about Schumer, but to me, she’s just not funny. She follows up a terrible performance in one of 2024’s worst cinematic disasters (Unfrosted) with another dud. Netflix can be so hit or miss when it comes to romantic comedies, and this one is definitely a miss. Sloppy writing and uninspired direction add up to a nothing-burger of a film.

Our Grade: D+, Inevitably, this comes down to how much of Schumer you’re willing to tolerate. My tolerance wasn’t high, and consequently, neither was my patience for this film. Honestly, it’s a skip for me. I can’t recommend it unless you’re one of those rare people who REALLY love Amy Schumer—and personally, I don’t think I know any. But hey, maybe they exist?
