Title: Heart Eyes
MPA Rating: R
Director: Josh Ruben
Starring: Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Michaela Watkins
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

What It Is: For the past few Valentine’s Days, couples have been brutally murdered in alarming numbers. The culprit? A serial killer known as Heart Eyes.

With the hallmark holiday fast approaching in the picturesque Pacific Northwest city of Seattle, love is in the air—but budding couples should beware if Heart Eyes is lurking nearby.

Ally (Holt) is forced to rethink her entire campaign for a new perfume, and her boss brings in advertising powerhouse Jay (Gooding) to help. But Cupid has a funny sense of timing, and he may have chosen the worst possible moment to strike these two with his arrow.

What We Think: A well-thought-out romantic slasher—a hybrid of two genres I love. Not only does it strike the perfect balance of silliness, but it also delivers some seriously great kills alongside plenty of laughs. Holt and Gooding have excellent chemistry, which is the key to making it all work. Without that, the movie wouldn’t have the mojo to sustain itself. One of the most fun aspects of this film is that, while the concept has been done to… death, it still works brilliantly.

Our Grade: B-,A very solid modern slasher that blends in the romantic angle really well. This is definitely a film that will appeal to slasher fans while also offering enough for those who just want to have a fun time at the movies.

If not for a dumb plot twist at the end, I would’ve rated this higher. While unexpected, the twist felt straight-up ridiculous and brought the film down a notch.

That said, it was great to see a Devon Sawa appearance—even if he doesn’t do all that much.

Check this one out—it’s a really fun time.
