Title: Bridget Jones: Made About the Boy
MPA Rating: R
Director: Michael Morris
Starring: Renée Zellweger, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo Woodall
Runtime: 2 hrs 4 mins
What It Is: We are back with Bridget Jones (Zellweger). Following the untimely death of her husband Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) she’s having a difficult time raising their two children. She also wants to go back to her career as a television producer. But Bridget wants to get her groove back in the romance game as well. Perhaps the young Roxster (Woodall) is just what the doctor ordered for our heroine. But can she deal with a much younger man?
What We Think: It’s nice to see Renée Zellweger back. She fully embodies Bridget Jones and understands her so well. This version of Bridget is in a very different place than the one we met back in the 1990s. She’s now a widow, having lost her husband in an accident, and she’s a mother—though her parenting skills might seem questionable at first, depending on how you feel about her approach.
But there’s growth here. As the film progresses, Bridget evolves.
Leo Woodall plays a bit of a scoundrel, but even if we dislike the path he takes, we understand where he’s coming from.
This film isn’t reinventing the wheel by any means. What it does do is smartly build on the formula used in the first three films (with varying degrees of critical success). Honestly, I think this might be the best of them.
While it may not capture the cultural zeitgeist like the original did—it’s a different time, after all—it’s still a charming, heartfelt romantic comedy, full of life and character.
Our Grade: B+, Easily accessible on Max, this film is a delightful addition to the romantic comedy genre. For fans of the format, it delivers exactly what you’re hoping for: charm, heart, and plenty of laughs. And if romantic comedies aren’t usually your thing—well, you might be wrong.
Renée Zellweger returns with a renewed energy, bringing a fresh take to a familiar character. It’s a joy to watch her back in her element. This is a feel-good film that’s well worth your time.
