Title: Wolf Man
MPA Rating: R
Director: Leigh Whannell
Starring: Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Matilda Firth
Runtime: 1 hr 43 mins

What It Is: Blake (Abbott) grew up hearing macabre tales about a creature lurking in the woods near his family’s remote farmhouse. Now, as an adult, he returns to those very same woods—only to discover that those tall tales might not have been so tall after all.

After his father’s mysterious death, Blake, his wife Charlotte (Garner), and their daughter Ginger (Firth) find themselves in serious danger. Unfortunately, they realize it far too late.

What We Think: What the hell, man.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Invisible Man, though I know some people loved it. I did, however, love Upgrade. This? This isn’t as good as either of those.

Let’s start with Whannell’s script—it’s so damn dumb it pissed me off. Rarely has a writer-director managed to deliver such a combination of bad writing and bad direction.

Christopher Abbott is one of the finest American actors working today—always the most enthralling part of whatever he’s in. Look at Black Bear, where he matches Aubrey Plaza step for step. Or Possessor, where he goes toe-to-toe with Andrea Riseborough. He’s never afraid to share the screen with equally talented actors and make it work. He does the same here with the highly talented Julia Garner.

But even with strong performances, the characters make the dumbest decisions. Nothing makes sense.

This was just truly disappointing.

Our Grade: C+, Mediocrity at its finest. Everything about this feels cheaper than the budget. There are some visual and aesthetic choices I completely disagree with. Wasting a great one-two punch in your lead roles on nonsensical crap? Crazy behavior.

Blumhouse continues to prove they have no understanding of what made these classic Hollywood characters work.

If this still sounds good to you despite all that, you have two ways to get your hands on it. Pick up a physical copy starting today (March 18)—we happen to have one (thanks, Universal!)—or check out the rental links below.
