Title: One of Them Days
MPA Rating: R
Director: Lawrence Lamont
Starring: Keke Palmer, SZA, Patrick Cage
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins
What It Is: Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are best friends, barely scraping by each month to pay rent for their Los Angeles apartment. But when Alyssa hands their rent money to her boytoy, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal), he reinvests it—into himself and his t-shirt line.
Now, they’re scrambling to come up with the cash before they get evicted. On top of that, Dreux still needs to get her hair done for a potential promotion at work.
Yeah… it’s definitely gonna be one of those days.
What We Think: This film is hilarious. I was completely on board with whatever it was trying to sell me.
Keke Palmer remains, as always, a star. And SZA? I’d love to see her in more projects. The script is genuinely funny—and since this is a comedy, that’s kind of the most important thing.
Lawrence Lamont doesn’t try to get too fancy with his direction. Instead, he lets Syreeta Singleton’s writing do the heavy lifting—and it works. They really earn that R rating.
Another thing I loved? You sort of know where this film is headed, but honestly? You don’t care. Because it’s all about the journey, not the destination.
Our Grade: A, Hell yes! The first great comedy of 2024. Can we get more films like this, please?
The girlfriend comedy—like the buddy comedy—deserves more solid entries. Bridesmaids fits the bill, but for every one of those, we get a dozen that just aren’t that interesting. So, gimme more, please.
Also, let’s put SZA in way more stuff!
And shoutout to Katt Williams for his little cameo as Lucky, the crazy homeless guy—an absolute scene-stealer.
