Title: Flight Risk
MPA Rating: R
Director: Mel Gibson
Starring: Michelle Dockery, Topher Grace, Mark Wahlberg
Runtime: 1 hr 31 mins
What It Is: Winston (Grace) has been found hiding in a cabin in the Alaskan wilderness. Now, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Madolyn (Dockery) to transport the former mob accountant to his trial. But when Daryl (Wahlberg) is assigned to fly the plane, something about him feels off. Little does Madolyn know, someone on board isn’t who they claim to be—turning what should have been a routine flight into a deadly game of survival.
What We Think: Mark Wahlberg’s lessons in overacting—an alternate title for this film. He’s painfully bad here. Michelle Dockery does her best to keep the whole thing together, but it’s a losing battle. The visual effects look like crap, and Mel Gibson isn’t doing much to elevate this from the director’s chair. Normally, he’s quite capable behind the camera (despite his well-documented controversies), but here, there’s just nothing. Jard Rosenberg’s script is empty and, at times, downright cringeworthy. This is yet another shallow action flick with not enough meat on the bone to satisfy an audience. The reality is, films like this are a dime a dozen. I expect better from Gibson—not so much from Wahlberg or Grace, for that matter.
Our Grade: D+, There’s a certain audience this will appeal to—fans of the action genre or those who love Wahlberg’s work (who those people are, I have no idea). Listen, if this sort of thing is your cup of tea, more power to you. But for me? This wasn’t it.
