Title: Dog Man
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Peter Hastings
Starring: Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howley
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins

What It Is: Dog Man (Hastings) is a half dog, half man police officer. When his nemesis Petey (Davidson), the world’s most evil cat constantly escapes cat jail he’s given one more chance to put him away for good. As a counter Petey decides to clone himself but the one flaw in his plan is that the clone machine only gives him a child version of himself. A little guy affectionately known as Li’l Petey (Lucas Hopkins Calderon). A bigger problem begins to introduce itself to the city at the exact same time.

What We Think: As with Dav Pilkey’s other book series, Captain Underpants, the movie adaptation is quite good. It captures Pilkey’s unique and creative style—one that young kids and tweens will find joy and humor in. Even a jaded old critic like me had a really fun time just soaking in the sights and sounds of it all. The voice acting is top-notch, with everyone clearly having a blast, and it shows in their performances. The script is witty and fun, keeping viewers engaged while also providing enough visual appeal to entertain younger children.

Our Grade: B-, This is a fun one—definitely something older kids and their younger siblings can enjoy together. Parents can also feel comfortable with it. The silly animation style works well with the highly unserious script to create a kids’ film that’s just pure fun. Sometimes, you don’t need an underlying, wholly serious theme—sometimes, flashy and fun is enough. I’d recommend people check this one out. Pete Davidson is growing into someone who makes good, entertaining work and clearly has a great time doing it. That’s a solid goal for any actor.
