What It Is: Elliott (Stella) is a bit of a rebel. Fresh out of high school and only 18 years old, she’s got the world at her feet. When a strange chronological phenomenon occurs, it allows Elliott to meet and speak with her 39-year-old self (Plaza). This unexpected encounter forces her to rethink who and what she allows into her life.

But will it be enough to change the trajectory of her future for the better? Or are some people and events simply inevitable?

What We Think: This website has always been a big fan of Aubrey Plaza—it’s been clear for years. This performance will go down as one of her best in a while, and she doesn’t even have to do much. That’s because the film truly centers on Maisy Stella, who is absolutely excellent.

Maisy is part of a trend with Megan Park’s films—both of which have earned my recommendation. Her previous film, The Fallout, stood out in 2021 and was arguably everyone’s introduction to Jenna Ortega. Here, we’re seeing Maisy Stella on her ground floor, and I can’t wait to see more!

Sure, Maisy and Aubrey don’t exactly look like the same person, but that’s not really the point. There’s so much beauty in this story—a gorgeous exploration of the mistakes we knowingly make, and how sometimes the pain of those mistakes is worth it because of the people they bring into our lives.

Our Grade: B+, A wonderful little ball of joy and sadness, this film is a beautifully told tale from Megan Park. I can’t wait for her third feature—whatever it may be, it’s bound to tell the story of a young woman in a unique situation. Megan Park has a remarkable ability to deeply understand her heroines and what they’re going through, and it’s an absolute pleasure to witness her storytelling in action.
