Title: Subservience
MPA Rating: R
Director: S.K. Dale
Starring: Megan Fox, Michele Morrone, Madeline Zima
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

What It Is: When Nick (Morrone)’s wife, Maggie (Zima), falls ill, he struggles to keep up with the household responsibilities. Realizing he needs help, he decides to invest in a “domestic SIM,” a lifelike android designed to look and behave like a real person. The android, named Alice (Fox), begins to develop a sense of sentience and starts doing things her way.

But when Maggie recovers and returns home, Alice’s place in the household dynamic feels threatened. Like a territorial animal, she’s ready to fight for her spot.

What We Think: There’s nothing here. This movie, much like Megan Fox’s performance, feels like a blank sheet of paper. She’s aiming for a standard “robotic” portrayal, but her delivery comes off as too stiff to be effective. She also lacks the acting depth needed to bring any nuance to the role.

Michele Morrone doesn’t fare much better. A big part of the issue is that M3GAN already explored this concept more effectively and with far more intrigue. These two films share essentially the same premise, but this one is just empty—a hollow, uninspired thriller that’s completely devoid of actual thrills.

Our Grade: D+, Yeah, I didn’t like this. I know it’s blowing up on Netflix right now—it’s been in the top ten since it premiered—but would I watch it again? No. Would I recommend it? Absolutely not.

If you still want to see for yourself, click the link below to check it out on Netflix—but don’t say I didn’t warn you. There’s nothing here that’s likely to grab your attention. Megan Fox needs more compelling roles because she can’t elevate weak material. She’s just not a strong enough actress for that—but she does look good, and that probably won’t ever change.

Skip this one.
