Title: Gazer
MPA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Ryan J. Sloan
Starring: Arianna Mastroianni, Renee Gagner, Jack Alberts
Runtime: 1 hr 54 mins

What It Is: Frankie (Mastroianni, who also wrote the film) is a woman living with a neurological disorder that causes her to lose track of time. A single blank stare can cost her hours. When a strange woman approaches her with a paid favor, Frankie finds herself entangled in a situation she doesn’t fully understand—one with stakes far higher than she could have imagined. As her world begins to spiral out of control, only the tapes she’s recorded for herself can help her stay anchored in time as she works to unravel the mystery of her predicament.

What We Think: What a phenomenal debut by Ryan Sloan! I had the chance to catch his film at Fantastic Fest, followed by a great discussion about his work. One of the most striking aspects of the film is its visual style, achieved through the use of a 16mm camera. Cinematographer Matheus Bastos and writer/star Arianna Mastroianni were also present, and I asked Matheus about the experience of shooting on 16mm—he was more than happy to share his insights.

Beyond the unique method of filming, Sloan proves to be absolutely stellar behind the lens. His vision is razor-sharp and perfectly executed. Arianna Mastroianni gives her all in front of the camera, and Sloan positions that camera with precision, capturing every moment to its fullest effect. As we journey through this mystery and the layers of Frankie’s psyche unravel, we find ourselves unraveling right alongside her.

Our Grade: A+, An absolute stunner—I wasn’t prepared for this one. I’m thrilled about what this film achieves, but I’m even more excited to see what Ryan Sloan does next. As I said on X: “Brilliant direction, and Ariella Mastroianni—who also wrote this—is simply spectacular. She commands the screen from the very first minute, and the twists and turns of this unique crime thriller will keep you guessing until the credits roll.”

Do yourself a favor and watch this. It needs all the support it can get. And Ryan… if you’re reading this, come on the podcast. We’d love to have you!
