Title: Don’t Fall in Love With Yourself
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Jon Nix
Starring: Justin Pearson, Jospeh Karam, Jason Pettigrew
Runtime: 1 hr 33 mins

What It Is: This documentary explores the life and career of musician Justin Pearson. It delves into his childhood in a broken household in Arizona, his move to the San Diego area, and the thriving music scene there that ultimately led him to found a record label and establish himself as the premier frontman of grindcore. But what goes into the creation of record labels, songs that are shorter than their titles, and outfits that evoke a sado-masochistic aesthetic? Here, we get to explore it all.

What We Think: First and foremost, a good music documentary will always bring something valuable to the table. When it tells a story about music I like, listen to, or care about, that’s a definite bonus. Justin Pearson has been a driving force in the California hardcore and grindcore scene, helping to break many different bands. It’s fascinating to learn more about where such an unconventional and intriguing musician came from and what led him to create such unique music. The documentary also sheds light on a scene that isn’t often talked about.

Our Grade: B-, A really interesting and insightful documentary. I loved what it achieved here, and I thought Jon Nix did a phenomenal job of telling Justin Pearson’s story. This isn’t a game-changing music documentary, but if you’re into the grindcore scene, there’s a lot of lore and history to appreciate. Nix clearly has a passion for the subject. This was his first feature, and he did an excellent job of putting it together and holding my interest. I think others will find value in the story told here. I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good music documentary—even if the music isn’t to your taste.
