Title: Longlegs
MPA Rating: R
Director: Osgood Perkins
Starring: Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood
Runtime: 1 hr 41 mins

What It Is: A serial murderer is killing families, and the FBI, particularly Agent Lee Harker (Monroe), believes she’s hot on the trail of the mysterious “Longlegs” killer (Cage). However, this killer is more than he appears. Capturing the mysterious murderer is just the beginning; now that he’s caught, Lee faces an even bigger and more nefarious riddle to solve: who was truly behind the actions that ultimately led to the murders of multiple families? Who’s next? Lee thinks she’s got it figured out, but she may not like the answer.

What We Think: What Osgood Perkins has done with this film is a marvel. It’s not only one of the best horror films of 2024, but also one of the year’s very best overall. Nicolas Cage is unrecognizable in his role, and Maika Monroe delivers a stellar, career-best performance. Her portrayal of Lee Harker is smart, obsessed, and at the right moments, tenacious enough to finish the job. Perkins shines in his writing, and even more so behind the lens. This film is a game-changer from NEON, who are coming out swinging for A24’s crown.

Our Grade: A+, One of my favorite films of 2024. I am not, nor have I ever been, the biggest “horror guy.” So for me to say this should tell you all you need to know about how hard this film comes out swinging. It’s suspenseful, terrifying, and sharp as a tack. I need more of this. I need more of NEON just saying to movie-going audiences, “Here, fuck you, have this. We promise you’ll like it.” Because they are 100% correct. So many of their upcoming projects look like they’re going to change the game, and I can’t wait. Superb filmmaking, coupled with breathtaking performances, coalesce to make one of the year’s finest pieces. A MUST-see, immediately.
