What It Is: Former 4 Non Blondes lead singer Linda Perry reveals her most vulnerable and broken parts in this no-holds-barred documentary, offering an intimate look into her life and the cost of her relentless pursuit of success.

What We Think: Linda Perry is a ‘90s icon and hit songwriter. She’s written some of the biggest hits for high-profile pop stars, and her song What’s Up remains a banger to this day. This documentary paints a vivid picture of the woman behind the legacy, showcasing her relentless work ethic. As someone who identifies as a Type A personality and a workaholic, I found her drive relatable.

This isn’t your average Behind the Music documentary. Instead, it follows Linda over the course of a few months, offering a firsthand look at her busy, relentless schedule. We see her undergo surgery and cope with the passing of her mother, with whom she had a deeply complicated relationship.

I found the documentary to be incredibly humanizing for a figure who, to me, was always a bit shrouded in mystery. Before this film, I didn’t know much about Linda Perry, but now I feel like I have a much clearer understanding of her. While there were moments where the film seemed to meander, and the direction wasn’t always clear, I still enjoyed it immensely.

The stop-motion sequences were a lot of fun and added some of my favorite parts to the film. I also loved how the documentary showcased Linda’s songwriting process—those moments were some of the most beautiful in the film.

Our Grade: A, All in all, this is a solid documentary showcasing a musical legend. If you’ve ever picked up an instrument or had the desire to play music, I highly recommend this documentary. Linda Perry is an absolute force to be reckoned with.
