Title: Am I OK?
MPA Rating: R
Director: Stephanie Allynne, Tig Notaro
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jermain Fowler
Runtime: 1 hr 26 mins

What It Is: Lucy (Johnson) and her best friend Jane (Mizuno) are going through a bit of a life awakening. Lucy isn’t sure who she is anymore, and to top it off, Jane has been given a promotion that will move her to London. This is something Lucy can’t deal with as she tries to navigate her increasingly complicated love life—a love life made even more challenging by the fact that she no longer knows who she is.

What We Think: Dakota Johnson is such a talented actress when given something substantial to work with. Unlike some of her less well-written roles, here she gets good material and really shines. The discussion of sexual identity and preference is handled well—it’s funny, yet truthful, and never disrespectful to those in the LGBTQIA+ community. From a directorial perspective, Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro, who are a real-life married couple, are clearly first-time feature directors. A big positive is that the vision was there, and they knew exactly the film they wanted to make. That unified approach makes it easier for the acting to shine, and there are good performances here. Kiersey Clemons is underrated, and Sonoya Mizuno shines. But it’s Johnson’s film at the end of the day, and she knocks it out of the park.

Our Grade: B, A gem of a film, this is one that will make you believe in the strength and power of friendship—especially at a point in life when you’re not even sure who you are. It’s an easy watch and even easier to find, as it’s available on Max. This is one I can wholeheartedly recommend! I promise there’s something here for everyone—anyone who’s ever had a best friend, or anyone who’s ever been unsure of who they are, even into their thirties. That’s what this film brings, all in a lovely, and thankfully compact, 86-minute package.
