Title: A Family Affair
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Joey King, Zac Efron
Runtime: 1 hr 51 mins

What It Is: Zara (King) works for big Hollywood star Chris Cole (Efron). An impossible man who is, frankly, not the sharpest tool in the shed. Zara adores working for Chris but sometimes he can be impossible to deal with. On a chance meeting Zara’s widowed mother Brooke (Kidman) meets Chris and Zara’s work is now a heck of a lot closer to home. Brooke and Chris begin seeing each other, but Zara’s know, edge of Chris’ past has her weary and probably overly protective of her mother. Will any of this work out or is Brooke simply a notch on her younger beaus bedpost?

What We Think: If we look at this for what it is, we don’t get much. It’s a nice spin on the concept of an older person dating a younger person, with the roles reversed. Kidman is always intriguing in whatever role she takes on. Efron is fine, even when he or the script gets in his way. This comedy lives and breathes with Joey King, who has become something of Netflix’s darling. It’s a lot more fun, even if only slightly better written than the cinematic fiasco that is “The Kissing Booth” To be fair, that’s not the biggest praise. This is still a rather predictable romantic comedy. You all know me—I’m THAT guy, the one who’ll defend a romantic comedy. But this one isn’t so bad that it needs defending, nor is it interesting enough to demand your attention.

Our Grade: D+, Certainly skippable and not exactly worth it for most audiences. Those who are in on the rom-com genre will love this. If that’s not you, it’s a film to avoid. It’s a Netflix movie that’s not aiming for awards season. I’ll reiterate a point I keep making: it’s there. Do with that what you will.
