Title: Babes
MPA Rating: R
Director: Pamela Adlon
Starring: Ilana Glazer, Michelle Buteau, Hasan Minhaj
Runtime: 1 hr 44 mins

What It Is: Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau) have been best friends since childhood. During their yearly Thanksgiving trek to the movies, Dawn’s water breaks. On the way home from the hospital after Dawn gives birth, Eden meets Claude (Stephen James). After a one-night stand, Eden becomes pregnant, and now it’s her turn to be the pregnant one in the group—an unfamiliar situation for the previously childless and currently directionless Eden. Now, she’s facing a reality that’s about to change her life.

What We Think: This film is absolutely hilarious. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau have so much chemistry. They are showstoppers. This film would not have worked if they weren’t on their A-game. Michelle Butreau has been a favorite of mine for a LONG time now. Which goes all the way back to when I saw here in Sell By which is now called Almost Love. Hasan Minhaj makes the most out of his time on screen. This is a buddy film told from a perspective we don’t often get. Two lifelong girlfriends just trying to get by. Gimme more of these two doing anything really.

Our Grade: A-,One of 2024’s funniest films, this is an underrated gem. Check it out because it is absolutely fire! With such a talented cast and a script whose jokes per minute are perfectly timed, this one will have you cracking up without missing a beat. It’s available right now On Demand, so don’t miss it. This is one of the many surprise comedies that came out of SXSW this year. Films like this have been happening more frequently, and I am here for it. Just look at last year’s Joy Ride, which had a clear message of female camaraderie.
