Title: Road House
MPA Rating: R
Director: Doug Liman
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen
Runtime: 2 hr 1 mins
What It Is: Dalton (Gyllenhaal) is a former MMA fighter who, after a tragedy has given up his dreams as a pro fighter. Now he fights underground for pennies and scraps. That is until the owner of a Road House simply called The Road House, Frankie (Jessica Williams) asks Dalton to take over bouncing duties. Dalton, however, might be in over his head. You see there are some people in town that don’t even want The Road House to exist, for their own selfish, greedy, reasons. Lead among these is rich fuck boy Ben Brandt (Magnussen) who has plans…and they don’t include the The Road Houses existence.
What We Think: What an absolute mess of a film. Jake Gyllenhaal is really out here trying. Sadly, he’s let down by way too many factors. Let’s start with Conor McGregor. Jesus he is terrible in this. He’s walking funny and smiling throughout the entire thing. Sure he looks believable when he fights anyone but outside of that…no thank you! When Dalton is fighting straight up regular dudes the whole affair is breezy and fun. Then it all falls apart when Ben and his corrupt assholes come in.
Our Grade: D+, This is a bad film. Doug Liman does a bad job directing it. Without Gyllenhaal’s charisma there’s nothing to see here. It is without a doubt a slap in the face to the original film. A film that wasn’t much to begin with. It however was quite fun and funny. There’s nothing to be gained by watching this. It is an easy watch being on Prime Video. But seriously just don’t do it. It isn’t worth your time. Quite frankly there’s nothing worth watching here. A hard skip.
