Title: Damsel
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
Starring: Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett
Runtime: 1 hr 50 mins

What It Is: Elodie (Brown) is a princess of a very small and rather poor village. When a rich prince named Henry (Nick Robinson) asks for her hand in marriage it’s the perfect match for Elodie’s downtrodden father Lord Bayford (Winstone). As the wedding approaches something seems not so right with the whole proceeding. When the true intentions of Henry’s mother…Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) it will be up to Elodie to overcome the challenges presented in front of her.

What We Think: This one is a stinker, sadly. The plot armor is thick but that’s not the offensive part of how stupid this film is. The ending. The ending of this film is dumb. It is hilariously stupid and honestly, the audience deserves better. Millie Bobby Brown is so charismatic but she gets lost in the dumb narrative. The CGI doesn’t look all that good and Shohreh Aghdashloo sounds better than her character looks. Look. I love when we get a character who’s being a bad bitch in an action flick, but this is a bad film. One badly written, badly acted and terribly directed.  There is some light at the end of this somewhat awful tunnel. This is proof that Millie Bobby Brown is a star. In spite of it all she’s a star.

Our Grade: D+, Man. I had high hopes for this one. I reached out to Netflix to cover it early I was so excited to see what this was about. What I found was, unfortunately, something I found not very good. It’s hard to peg why this all felt so flat and uninteresting. Netflix can do better. I hope they do better. We, as an audience, deserve far better.
