Title: Argylle
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa
Runtime: 2 hrs 19 mins

What It Is: In her series of books author Elly Conway (Howard) writes of secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill). Her stories seem to have a strange habit of…well being based on reality. When a serect organization discovers this they are out to get her to write the next chapter of her latest novel…and they want her do it for their eyes only. When actual secret agent Aiden Wilde (Rockwell) shows up to save Elly from what will surely lead to her death.

What We Think: This is an utterly wacky film. Sadly the wackiness extends into the actual narrative and that, sadly hurts this film. Nothing on screen feels important because at no point does the film take itself seriously. I will give it this…there’s a scene, in the films 3rd act that goes absurdly hard. Like it’s seriously so much fun that I forgot for a moment the utter lunacy and stupidity of this film. This is simply because you think at a certain point “it can’t get weirder” and it absolutely does. That said Vaughn is more than capable behind the lens. Something of a magician within the craziness happening in front of us. Jason Fuchs script though is a bit too unhinged and, frankly, stupid to work.

Our Grade: C-, This is a divisive film to say the least. In one hand it is a fun time at the cinema in the other it isn’t believe, the twist in M. Night Shyamalan levels of idiocy. Sam Rockwell isn’t really believable as a spy despite his best efforts. Cavil and John Cena are gold here and I’d have paid money to just see those two knock out one-liners. Shoutout to Dua Lipa for being…Dua Lipa. Hello nurse indeed. Ridiculous. This one will depend on your tolerance for nonsense. Mine was, and sadly remains after the fact, too low to get any enjoyment out of this.
