Title: If You Were the Last
MPA Rating: TV-MA
Director: Kristian Mercado
Starring: Anthony Mackie, Zoe Chao, Natalie Morales
Runtime: 1 hr 32 mins

What It Is: Astronauts Adam Gherrity (Mackie) and Jane Kuang (Chao) are stuck in space with a somewhat broken ship. Their day to day consists of trying to repair said ship. Watching movies, giving each other tattoos and gardening in hopes of cross breeding a berry and good ole marijuana. But it gets lonely up there. Being stranded for three years on a floating flotilla. Running out of resources…and time. When they begin to feel the shadow of death closing in as the resources become scarce the two think that perhaps it’s time to go out with a bang…or two.

What We Think: The chemistry is always important in any romantic comedy. When those two leads are lost in space and the only two characters we see it’s even more important. I love Zoe Chao and for a long time she’s been the small background character, or the best friend in a RomCom. Here we with her in the lead of a similar project and honestly she’s great. Anthony Mackie is the soul of the film but Chao is it’s heart. Beating and pulsing throughout.

Our Grade: B, I had a great time with this. Sue me. Such a great romantic comedy. A unique setting and subtle sexy energy really brings this picture to life. It is safely put together and directed in such a way where it all just sorta works. Kristian Mercado is letting his actors do their thing and happens to be pointing a camera at them. Sometimes that just sorta works. This being on Peacock means it’s an easy film to find and totally worth the time. It’s a throwback to the 90 minute RomCom and that in and of itself is so nice and feels so fresh.
