Title: The Equalizer 3
MPA Rating: R
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Starring: Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea
Runtime: 1 hr 49 mins
What It Is: Robert McCall (Washington) has decided that he loves living in the south of Italy. A quiet little town is shaken when the mafia try to take control. Robert being who he is, and who he was he makes it his mission to rid this lovely village of the plague of organized crime. Of course his methods aren’t what one would look at as peaceful, but with mafiosos peaceful resolutions are rarely a thought let alone achievable.
What We Think: Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua have worked together so much. Because of that they seem to put out an endless stream of movies that aren’t good enough for the talents of Washington and too ambition enough for the stunted direction of Fuqua. Whatever this film is doing it isn’t succeeding particularly well. I think it is time that we mercifully end this franchise. I mean there’s a perfectly good (at least maybe it is) television show airing with Queen Latifah. For Fuqua, it may be time to retire. His last like, four movies have all felt a little too similar and meaningless.
Our Grade: D, Hard pass from me. There really wasn’t much to hook me in and Denzel alone isn’t going to sell me. Not anymore. Don’t see this. It’s a badly directed mess of a film that, though it at times tries to have action, fails quite miserably. Listen, I don’t know what to tell you besides the film being an ugly, rather uninteresting mess. One with no reason to be sought out. Even if you enjoyed the first two films in this series (and perhaps you did) this one is a failure of those prior experiences.
