Title: Love at First Sight
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Vanessa Caswill
Starring: Haley Lu Richardson, Ben Hardy, Rob Delaney
Runtime: 1 hr 31 mins

What It Is: Hadley Sullivan (Richardson) is a rather unorganized mess of a woman. Oliver Jones (Hardy) is a statistics major obsessed with the odds. These two shouldn’t be compatible. The odds as it seems might just be in their favor. It turns out they’re on the same flight to England. It’s a rather long flight, happenstance and serendipity do their thing and the two learn so much about one and other. What they learn changes the course of their lives forever.

What We Think: Adorable and unapologetically romantic. Haley Lu Richardson continues to impress in another small film. She shuffles through a gamut of emotions to get us to our ending. The entire concept of time, and timing and statistics really jells nicely because it sets us up for things to happen a certain way. In the end it does tread a bit too much into the standard romcom narrative. It sort of becomes by the numbers and that can be to the detriment of the overall somewhat emotional narrative. There are some truly romantic moments here that get somewhat severed by the decisions made before a camera even got turned on.

Our Grade: C+, So much went right but not enough for me was done well to give this anything but a run of the mill romantic comedy. Haley Lu is always such. joy in all of her projects. Here she is controlling the entire film and without her Ben Hardy isn’t working as well. They work off of each other and create great chemistry. Director Vanessa Caswill makes her feature debut here and it’s nothing special but you can see she has an eye for moments. I think that’s my favorite part of the film. That there are moments here that if paused look like a still life of romance. Check it out. It isn’t the worst thing.
