Title: Dumb Money
MPA Rating: R
Director: Craig Gillespie
Starring: Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins
What It Is: Keith Gill (Dano) is a man who knows a thing or two about the stock market. That being said he sees that a perfectly good stock in Gamestop is being shorted by major investment firms. Keith decides he loves this stock and wants to have others invest in order to potentially benefit from this percieved short of the stock. Through social media and of course, Reddit, Gill will play the dangerous game of fighting Wall Street and all of it’s powerful firm.
What We Think: Gillespie is known for his biting biopics. Look no further than his previous endeavor I,Tonya. There’s always a tongue firmly in cheek with Gillespie and here his distain for the entire institution of Wall Street is clear. Paul Dano is such an underrated actor and my god is he having a helluva run right now. Between this, The Fabelmans and STUNNING us all in The Batman he’s clearly in an up swing in his career and I AM HERE FOR IT. Dudes always had the talent and it’s nice to see him being rewarded. Overall the film surprised me with the amount of character building we get out of Gill. Not so much that its super expository but enough where we understand just HOW gigantic what Gill was doing was to numerous people trusting him with their life’s investment.
Our Grade: A-, This won’t be for everyone but the breezy watch that was fairly funny worked for me, and this is my review sooo…Nonetheless I think there’s a lot here to like and most of it is Paul Dano being just really good here. When I look at this film as a whole project there’s certainly some of the direction thats meh but overall I really enjoyed everything here. Even new friend Vincent D’Onofrio is sleazy and amazing in this (despite not ACTUALLY being sleazy). Check this one out if you enjoyed I, Tonya or Cruella than you will certainly enjoy this. It has Craig Gillespie all over it.
