Title: The Good Mother
MPA Rating: R
Director: Miles Joris-Peyrafitte
Starring: Hilary Swank, Olivia Cooke, Jack Reynor
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins

What It Is: Marissa, is a journalist who’s son has died. Many think he died of a drug overdose but both she and his girlfriend Paige (Cooke) believe that something more sinister was behind his death. Though the two haven’t seen eye to eye before the two set out to figure out what happened, who did ir and hold someone accountable for his death. Though who probably did it might surprise both Marissa and the audience.

What We Think: Hilary Swank is a two-time Oscar winner and you know what…she’s fine here. Miles Joris-Peyrafitte is out here directing the hell out of this. I think the flaws here are with the script and likability of the characters which, of course, is a narrative issue. Joris-Peyrafitte wrote this alongside Madison Harrison, something we spoke to him about in our interview that you can watch HERE. The film on the whole is a pretty well-made thriller in spite of the budget restrictions it went through.Having a cast like this film does certainly helps. Whatever you think happens here, you’re probably right, but often it isn’t the destination but the journey of a film. There’s some plot points that’ll leave your jaw dropped and your head scratching.

Our Grade: C-, Does this sound like something you’d like to check out? It doesn’t exactly standout but if you decide to spend your money on this know that you really are in for a dramatic thriller that is sort of a throwback to an earlier time (read the 2000’s). That is probably for a very good reason if you listen to our interview with the director you’ll see why. So if you want a pretty good throwback…put your money on it.
