Title: Joy Ride
MPA Rating: R
Director: Adele Lim
Starring: Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins
What It Is: Audrey (Park) and Lolo (Cola) have been best friends since they were little girls. This stems from them being the only two Asian girls in their neighborhood. Now as adults Audrey is set to visit her and Lolo’s country of heritage…China. While there they meet up with Audrey’s college roomate, actress Kat (Hsu) and Lolo’s cousin Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) is along for the ride. It’s a girls trip…what could possibly go wrong here?
What We Think: This is comedy gold. From start to finish this is an absolutely hilarious film. Not only is the chemistry between our leading ladies infectious we as an audience are treated to some truly funny moments. What makes this comedy so compelling is it’s personal struggles from its characters. Each one has an angle and we learn so much about them throughout the course of the film. Not only that but as the film is coming to close the ending is simply beautiful. Likewise there’s a scene in this film that might be the most obscure and crazy scene in a comedy this year. Something that had me absolutely dying. I was also taken back by WHERE they were willing to go with this one.
Our Grade: A-, I like my comedies bold. This is CERTAINLY a boldy crafted film. Especially when you look at the script. Not only is this highly entertaining it is ridiculously funny and one of the best surprises (that really wasn’t a surprise at all) of 2023. Everyone should check this out. It’s so good. It really has a great heart at the center of it as well. One that is easy to get behind. I loved this film and recommend it highly.
