Title: Creed 2
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Michael B. Jordan
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Jonathan Majors, Tessa Thompson
Runtime: 1 hr 56 mins
What It Is: After winning yet another fight boxer Adonis Creed (Jordan) decides it is time to retire. Instead of getting to enjoy his time away from the ring, training the next generation and spending time with his wife, music producer Bianca (Thompson) and his daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent) there’s a problem. An old friend who went to prison, protecting Adonis, has been released. This man, Damian Anderson only wants one thing. A shot at a fighting career. At least that’s the story he’s telling.
What We Think: Michael B. Jordon is a phenomenal director if this is any indication. Not only are there EXTREMELY fun shots selected but it all LOOKS incredible. There are some shots here that I want framed. Tessa Thompson is, still, excellent working alongside Jordan. Majors gives off major villain vibes (now we know why!) This is a much better film than the second film in the series and deserves a place alongside the very best that this franchise brings. Its emotional core is one that relies on old tricks but does so in a way that isn’t demeaning to the audience, particularly those who’ve seen the previous two films.
Our Grade: A, One of the first great films of 2023. A fantastic sports film and a great conclusion to Adonis’ hero arc. No spoilers here but there’s a scene toward the end of this that genuinely looks like something out of ancient Rome. Two gladiators absolutely battling. Both their physical opponents and what that man represents to them. So much subtext is handled expertly by a first time feature director who’s clearly been doing his homework and watching Ryan Coogler closely. What results is a special piece of cinema.
