Title: You People
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Kenya Barris
Starring: Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy
Runtime: 1 hr 57 mins
What It Is: Ezra (Hill) is a man who believes he is “of the culture”. This belief is tested when he meets and falls in love with Amira (London). You see Ezra is a man of Jewish upbringing and Amira…well her family is Black Muslim. When it comes time to “meet the parents” as you can imagine that goes super well. What with the overbearing nature of Amira’s father Akbar (Murphy) and the equally overbearing nature of Ezra’s mother Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). All hells about to break loose.
What We Think: Ew. Not only is the film patently stupid and abhorrently offensive it lacks the comedy normally needed for a comedy. Eddie Murphy is inscrutably racist and unlikable. Jonah Hill comes off as a pompous wannabe and everything here fails to impress at any level. Nia Long deserves better than this! Netflix really will put out anything to make a buck. I’m not even sure this film was worth the time and efforts of it’s cast. Cliched and not funny enough to get away with it. Who was this film made for?
Our Grade: D-, BECAUSE it got me to laugh once I’m not going to fail it. It does plenty of stupid things in it’s quest to get laughs from the audience. I don’t know why you’d even bother watching. It’s on Netflix but seriously DO NOT waste your time on this borderline racist piece of “comedy” that wholly misses the point of the genre it is supposed to be in. You can probably pinpoint what’s going to happened anyway so just…whatever you think happens…it happens trust me. The situations around it aren’t strong or funny enough to support whatever ambition this film tried to support.
