Title: All Quiet on the Western Front
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Edward Berger
Starring: Felxi Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer
Runtime: 2 hr 28 mins

What It Is: Paul Bäumer (Kammerer) is a young German soldier in World War I. And while he, like many young Germans is excited for the prospect of fighting for his country it is the reality and the horror of war that becomes true to him. This is not something he is prepared for and we get a front row seat to the mud, blood and guts that was the first World War.

What We Think: This is one of the most beautiful looking films alongside it absolutely nailing the first decade of the twentieth century. With its shell shocked perspective we really feel for Paul. We are in the trenches with him and his fellow soldiers. This is a remake of the 1930 Best Picture winner and I feel like it Edward Berger understood the assignment. He really gets, with his shot selection, the harrowing situation we’re in. It is also the stellar cinematography that gets us soaked right in to the trenches of World War I. An incredible watch and one I wish more people could catch on the big screen because it is a gorgeous experience.

Our Grade: B-, Not a lot of war films came out in 2022. With that said the best of these was this World War I remake. With top notch looks and a easy to follow story I’m saddened by the fact that this is on Netflix. It will, and would and always will be a gorgeous film on the big screen. So sure, watch the film, enjoy it but if you don’t see it on the big screen you’re missing something, certainly. Nonetheless this is a hidden foreign language GEM that everyone needs to check out.
