Title: The Princess
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Le-Van Kiet
Starring: Joey King, Olga Kurylenko, Antoni Davidov
Runtime: 1 hr 34 mins
What It Is: A princess, a castle with a tower it’s a story as old as the written word. This time however the princess knows how to fight back. In some unknown kingdom, The Princess (King) fights her way out of the tower in order to escape the evil Julius (Dominic Cooper) who’s determined to get the crown he was promised by any means necessary. This means killing anyone who gets in the way of him marrying The Princess and becoming king.
What We Think: This movie has an IQ smaller than Joey King herself. Stupid levels of violence and no real explanation for how this Princess turned into a deadly assassin. We’re given a vague implication that she’s been trained but given her level of fighting she’d have to have been trained for years. That being said this is also really REALLY cheesy. Visually it is REALLY trying and had a shot to be great. I think where Kiet is handcuffed is by the written word because Kiet moves the camera in such a way that the film itself looks really good.
Our Grade: D+, Dude, I wanted to like this but the action wasn’t good enough to warrant the absurdity of the overall narrative. Joey King is fine but, like honestly she needs better projects. She has the talent to do whatever sort of scripts she wants. It’s just that she’s picking really awful stuff. Couple this with the merciful end of The Kissing Booth trilogy and The In Between Joey King is just…well…2022 has been a rough one. Love her as an actress but with these sorts of qualities it’s hard to call oneself a “fan” of hers. Hopefully it does get better.
