Title: Fire Island
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Andrew Ahn
Starring: Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Margaret Cho
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins
What It Is: Every year Noah (Booster) and a band of merry gay men head to Fire Island for the party of the year. This year is really different though. Noah has made it his goal to get his best friend Howie (Yang) laid. When Howie meets a handsome doctor Noah feels the need to make sure it works out. All the while dealing with his intimacy (read commitment) issues. All this not to mention all of the other moving parts going on.
What We Think: A fresh perspective can really bring a lot to a tired old setup. Joel Kim Booster (who also stars in this) wrote a really funny and fresh romantic romp. One unafraid of pulling punches. There’s material here that certainly makes one raise an eyebrow. I laughed at this more than I thought I would and Booster and his crew really pull off some amazing chemistry together. Andrew Ahn is doing a little showing off with his direction here. His shot selection and viewfinder structure make the island look as gorgeous as it deserves. This makes me very excited to see whatever he chooses to do next.
Our Grade: B-, Well well Hulu a markedly better display than most of your previous output. This fun and funny romantic comedy is a great time. Comedies, by their nature, are supposed to make you laugh. This one does that, but it also has a heart to it. Whether that is from potential romances or solid friendships it delivers in that way. Check this one out because it’s genuine in its comedy, genuine in its intentions and so realistic. It’s jaded from a character standpoint but that comes off authentic. Nonetheless, it’s a good watch and easy to get to being on Hulu.
