Title: Crush
MPAA Rating: TV-MA
Director: Sammi Cohen
Starring: Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, Isabella Ferreira
Runtime: 1 hr 33 mins
What It Is: Paige Evans (Blanchard) is a young and brilliant artist. She’s determined to get into her dream school. When a graffiti vandal threatens the school everyone assumes it’s Paige. As punishment for a crime, she (MAYBE) didn’t commit she’s forced to join the track team. One big problem is her crush Gabriela (Ferreira) is on the track team as is Gabriela’s younger sister AJ (Cravalho). With the help of her friends Dillon (Tyler Alvarez) and his girlfriend Stacey (Teala Dunn) she might make it to graduation.
What We Think: This is a very by-the-numbers, funny little teen comedy. All of the young leads in this do an excellent job of carrying their weight. What happens with that are you get a comedy that’s nicely balanced even if it relies too much on things seen numerous times in this type of movie. What separates this from those…slightly is the story being told. It’s one that can also be seen as a sort of resource. For anyone struggling, young and unsure of who they are perhaps something like this can help.
Our Grade: C, I have to say this it’s a very funny film and one that doesn’t lose it’s charm despite everything. It is that charm that’ll keep people with the film. Luckily it’s only 93 minutes so it’s grips doesn’t have to be too tight to keep you there. I can recommend this one for sure. Especially if you’re a Hulu subscriber that loves a good romantic comedy. This one is unique enough that it warrants your attention. So if you have 90 free minutes and want a sweet, funny time this is one for you. I can at least say you’ll have a fun time.
