Title: Kimi
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: Zoë Kravitz, Rita Wilson, Devin Ratray
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: Angela Childs (Kravitz) is a tech worker with an extreme case of agoraphobia. Luckily she works from home. When she’s going through the various errors she fixes during her job she uncovers something sinister. Now she’ll have to fight her own fears, technology, and some hitmen determined to keep the truth from coming out. Can she do it or will leaving the house all be a bit too much for her at the end of the day.
What We Think: Soderbergh is at his best when he’s working with almost nothing to craft something that goes beyond its premise. Look at something like Unsane for such an example. The premise here shouldn’t work with the weight that it does. The film never overstays its welcome and Zoë Kravitz is as usual excellent. Her performance seems to fly by wire with every frame. Swooping and soaring at will. I love when Soderbergh puts together something interesting. Sharp and well put together this is most definitely a film audience will love. Get in get out and get on with your day. Maybe even have a double feature.
Our Grade: B-, I cant believe HBO MAX gave this one away. The big name director, a star who’s got a huge movie coming out at a similar time this had the makings of a small hit. Being a well-made film certainly helps. I didn’t expect this film to be of the quality that it is. Check this one out if you get the chance to. Speaking bluntly it’s damn suspenseful piece. One that never cheapens itself for the thrill of the fight. Seattle really got a chance to shine here as a character in the film.
