Review: The In Between

Title: The In Between
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Arie Posen
Starring: Joey King, Kyle Allen, Kim Dickens
Runtime: 1 hr 55 mins

What It Is: Tessa (King) is a survivor. When a terrible car accident claims the life of her boyfriend Skylar (Allen) she begins to believe that she’s receiving signals from the great beyond coming directly from him. As things begin to happen with more frequency Tessa becomes convinced that being here, alive, may not be worth it and that whatever in between he’s in is where she should be. Now her family must show her the value of sticking around.

What We Think: This is a movie that has been done far better in other movies. Equal parts If I Stay and Before I Fall and featuring the worst parts of these movies. Joey King just keeps putting these romantic dramas/comedies out and none of them are very good. They literally made three films in The Kissing Booth series. Kyle Allen on the other hand was in The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. A MUCH better romantic film that didn’t get coverage in 2021. Posen is trying to shine this turd up but sadly the infection hurting this film is the script. It tries (and tries) to pull on your heartstrings. It also tries to pull in the cinephiles with certain aspects of the “story”.

Our Grade: D-, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend you waste 2 hours of your day watching this. Also, a quick aside why is this almost two hours? I’m genuinely curious. Go ahead and skip this because it isn’t worth knowing about. HBO seems to have a film similar coming out that is looking much better than this. As it stands this was a romance lacking chemistry and a drama lacking the necessary element. Avoid at almost every cost.
