Title: CODA
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Sian Heder
Starring: Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kutsor
Runtime: 1 hr 51 mins

What It Is: Ruby (Jones) is the only person in her family that can hear. She is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). As the only non-deaf person in her family, she’s an asset to them. When her family’s fishing business is threatened she must make decisions that shape her future. Decisions about her future and her family’s livelihood clash and Ruby must choose between her dreams and aspirations and the family that has always been there.

What We Think: This is a beautiful soliloquy to both the deaf community and those families. Emilia Jones is absolutely stunning here. She’s the ethos of the film and every step of the way you’re rooting for her. A lot of that is Heder’s treatment. This is based on the French film La Famille Belier and it’s a rare case of the remake being better than the original in my opinion. There are moments of beautiful contemplative subtlety that you can’t have to happen without excellent performances. That’s the catalyst here. Troy Kutsor gives an amazing supporting performance that is sure to have you missing your own dad. There’s a genuine “good feeling” about the entire film. It’s uplifting and positive. Something desperately needed in 2021. Apple+ picked this up from Sundance where it impressed. I hope Apple will push this towards award season because it has a shot in several categories.

Our Grade: A, There’s something to be said for grading a film based on how it made you feel. This film made me feel better than I had prior to viewing it. That’s an astounding feat. This truly is a GREAT film and one of 2021’s best. This film is a gigantic surprise and one I recommend with the highest of regards. It’s on AppleTV+ so I can say you need to get on to this. This will probably end up a frontrunner for several awards and I think Troy Kutsor has a real shot at a supporting actor nomination. Have a seat. Grab the tissue and enjoy this one.
