Title: Inbetween Girl
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Mei Makino
Starring: Emma Galbraith, William Magnuson, Emily Garrett
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: Angie Chen (Galbraith) is a teenage artist. But like any teenage girl, she has needs. She begins to hook up with the big man on campus at her private school Liam (Magnuson). Angie doesn’t LIKE LIKE Liam she does appreciate the occasional ride home though. You see Liam is with Sheryl (Garrett) and they’re the IT couple of the school. The thing is life and hormones get in the way as Angie’s parents go through a divorce and she begins the aforementioned hooking up. Her art is also taking a hit. With Sheryl’s help, her Instagram begins to take off.
What We Think: As a harmless piece of teenage cinema, this works way too well. All the characters…even Liam are likable. As a whole, I feel like the story is simple but effective. It doesn’t overstay its welcome due to the slim 89-minute runtime and overall brings quality through its narrative. Let me say right now that Emma Galbraith absolutely shines in this. There’s an authenticity to this entire experience that I cannot speak to. In short, I’ve never been a teenage girl but Angie’s experiences seem real to me. That helps the narrative shape and carve into what it inevitably becomes.
Our Grade: A-, This was a truly refreshing film in a sea of big-time action films sometimes it’s these little teen comedies that can get you through. Not only is this a fresh insight into what I can only assume it’s like to be a Gen Z female. I would highly recommend you all check this one out. It is a fantastically made feature and for director Mei Makino a debut that many will look back at fondly.
