Title: Tom & Jerry
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Tim Story
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost
Runtime: 1 hr 41 mins
What It Is: Classic rivals Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse are back at it again. This time they are doing battle in a gorgeous downtown hotel. Kayla (Moretz) is a schemer who’s somehow managed to get a job, at least temporarily, at said hotel. You see there’s an extra need for help this weekend. A huge wedding between celebrities Preeta (Pallavi Sharda) and Ben (Jost). At the same time, Tom and Jerry are battling for the turf that is this hotel.
What We Think: I hate hate HATED this movie. It’s a movie made for children but it is one that seemingly talks down to them. As if they won’t or can’t recognize what acting could or is. Children are smart. That, for me, was a large tell that the next hour and twenty minutes was going to be hellacious. Boy was I on the nose with that verbiage. Every bit of this mess is something I wish I hadn’t had to watch. This is truly a film that belongs with the likes of fellow animated/real-life atrocity Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Our Grade: F, For being a hellscape of a catastrophe this unlucky film has earned one of 2021’s first failures. Do not under any circumstances watch this thing. Just trust me DO NOT. Your mental health is not worth having to sit through this. You’re better. This is a situation where Chloë Grace Moretz is 0-2 for me this year. I didn’t care for Shadow in the Cloud and that was mostly due to the writing. This one here is just a whole massacre of the cinematic art. The fact that they just sort of excuse the fact that all the dogs, cats and mice are animated and never quite reference it.
