Title: I Care a Lot
MPAA Rating: R
Director: J Blakeson
Starring: Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González
Runtime: 1 hr 58 mins

What It Is: For Marla Grayson (Pike) the elderly are a means to an end. You see she’s in the busy of becoming the guardian for those without a next of kin. Those who are at an advanced age sometimes need a little help. Marla is here to help. At least…that’s the impression that she gives. When she tries to take advantage of Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest) that proves to be a mistake. You see she may not be exactly who they thought she was.

What We Think: This is such an odd movie to talk about. In one respect Rosamund Rike is utterly fantastic as the despicable Marla. On the contrary, the narrative suffers from a lack of believability. You’re telling me that this woman can take out the Russian mafia or at the very least a major player in it. Likewise despite the character’s sour impression the films ending which we won’t spoil seems…small compared to the rest of the picture. Blakeson does some good work behind the camera. He really allows himself to use the camera to build relationships in the film. He doesn’t quick cut but the film still “feels” fast-moving. That’s a great trick.

Our Grade: B+, A really interesting film lt down by some questionable narrative decisions I think the dialogue itself is all rather snappy, and the acting, even in the supporting roles is great (cheers to Eiza Gonzalez who is really good). This is certainly something that deserved a larger release outside Netflix. Nonetheless, I think that did help some people check it out who may have been hesitant. Rosamund Pike continues to absolutely kill it as a cold-hearted bitch of a character. Something she received an Oscar nomination for with Gone Girl. I do hope we don’t typecast her as this because she is SUCH a talented actress. This is honestly a terrific display of that talent.
