Title: Wonder Woman 1984
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Patty Jenkins
Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig
Runtime: 2 hrs 31 mins
What It Is: Following the events of Wonder Woman Diana of Themyscira is hiding in plain sight never shows her true power except occasionally to save the day. When a mysterious rock is found it seems this item is cursed with the ability to grant anything you wish. As with anything though there’s a price to pay for this wish. When mild-mannered scientist Barabra Minerva (Wiig) wishes to “be more like Diana” she truly does not understand what that wish has brought forth. Meanwhile, a down on his luck oilman named Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) has personally absorbed the power of the stone.
What We Think: If the description I’ve given of the film above makes little to no sense I assure you it makes even less sense in its execution. This movie is a mess on the grandest scale…literally. It cost a lot of money to make this movie. It’s got a lot of runtime to it (unnecessarily so) and it has way too many characters. Sadly the thing it has the most of though…are plotholes. Gal Gadot is a bit too stiff here. Pedro Pascal is eating so much scenery he certainly didn’t require catering. Kristen Wiig is perhaps the best part of this film and she’s in a completely different one from her co-stars. This script lets talk about it. It’s horrendous. Characters make decisions that are nonsense in every respect of that word. Despite saying earlier that Wiig’s Barbara was probably the best part her character decisions are just..stupid. The “wish” angle fails mierably.
Our Grade: F, Patty Jenkins went from completely “getting” Wonder Woman to not getting her at all. She undoes all the good she did with the first one. Diana goes from a reliable and fierce woman to a school girl fawning over her crush. Don’t talk to me about Chris Pine in this. He’s scenary. He is actually less useful then a ficus. Don’t see this. HBO MAX wtf dude? Warner Bros. WTF DUDE! There’s nothing enjoyable here just a bad film that’s way too freaking long.
