Title: I Blame Society
Director: Gillian Wallace Horvat
Starring: Gillian Wallace Horvat, Keith Poulson, Chase Williamson
Runtime: 1 hr 24 mins
What It Is: Playing a slightly fictionalized version of herself, Gillian maneuvers through the difficulties of life as a struggling filmmaker. Her passion project begins to take hold of her entire life as the film (and the film within the film) takes a drastic turn towards violence and self-indulgence.
What We Think: There are layers to the story from start to finish that is fun to unpack and form opinions on. The movie is presented with enough complexity to be provoking, and yet doesn’t seem to be trying too hard to do so. It finds a great balance between humor and seriousness, predictability and absurdity, and the real and the surreal. And since the film is about its own creation, I imagine it must have been just as fun to make, as it is to watch.
Our Grade: A, This movie is fun, original, and thought-provoking. The meta-commentary is an amusing style of depicting the trials of trying to make it in the film industry. Full of honesty, Gillian Wallace Horvat shows us who she is, an artist striking out against everything that’s holding them down from achieving their goals. I highly recommend this film.
