Title: Superintelligence
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Ben Falcone
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, James Corden, Bobby Cannavale
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins
What It Is: Carol (McCarthy) is an extraordinarily ordinary woman. This causes a superintelligence (voiced by Corden) to take an interest in her as a means of gaining insight into humanity. One thing he wants to learn is how humans fall in love. Why they make the decisions they do? What drives them? If he’s sufficiently happy he will allow humans to live. If he doesn’t…well…total destruction of the human race is in order. So I suppose Carol is our last hope eh?
What We Think: When discussing Falcone films starring his wife Melissa McCarthy the bar really isn’t that high. Tammy is straight hot garbage and The Boss was a minor step up I didn’t see Life of the Party but who cares. This one is okay. It’s harmless fun. Melissa McCarthy doesn’t go too hard into her standard character. Some of the tropes are still there. The falling down, the yelling, and silly stuff’s there but it is toned down. Bobby Cannavale is sort of charming…even if an aloof goof. The script is an irrelevant mess of jokes. Most of them hit…mildly. There is real chemistry and a certain charm between McCarthy and Cannavale. That carries the weight here.
Our Grade: C-, This might be the highest-rated film of Ben Falcone’s collaboration with his wife. It’s by no means a good film in fact most will probably dislike it. For me the things it was trying to do just worked…again mostly. It isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel it really is just trying to entertain for 1 hour and 46 minutes. It’s an easy watch and easy to find since it is on HBO MAX. Check this one out! It’ll at least take your mind off of the world, even if for only a little part of your day.
