Title: The Broken Hearts Gallery
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Natalie Krinsky
Starring: Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar
Runtime: 1 hr 49 mins
What It Is: Lucy (Viswanathan) is somewhat of a hoarder. She tends to take little trinkets from various adventures…and relationships in her life. On one of the worst nights of her life she drunkenly stumbles into the car of Nick (Montgomery), who she ends up meeting a few times. The future hotel owner encourages Lucy to create “The Broken Hearts Gallery” an art piece where people dump old odds and ends attached to past relationships.
What We Think: This is a very fun little rom-com. By and large, it’s a harmless release. Dacre Montgomery and Geraldine Viswanathan (who’s lovely by the way) have magnetic chemistry that I really enjoyed seeing on screen. It’s too reliant on genre tropes and you 100% know how this is going to end. All in all, it’s a predictable but lovable romantic schlock. I love what Natalie Krinsky does from the shot selection and pacing perspective. Really just allowing the funny moments of the somewhat by the numbers script sees you having a fun time with this. The supporting cast rounds out the performances well and Molly Gordon and Phillipa Soo make good for the supportive BFFs. For all it’s easy routes taken the charm is there to hold you through the breezy 109 mins.
Our Grade: C+, This is what it is. Nothing more nothing less. I’m the target audience for this. Someone who loves the romantic comedy. If that’s not you then perhaps stay away from this one. With its charms and wit it made me really like it. It’s a good debut from Krinsky and I want to see what she’s going to do next. Hopefully she’s learned from this and brings us something with a bit more depth but equal amounts of heart and pizzazz.
