Title: Come As You Are
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Richard Wong
Starring: Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, Ravi Patel
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

What It Is: Scotty (Rosenmeyer) is a disabled young man struggling with his quadriplegia. His friend Mo (Patel) is blind and works at the facility. When new guy Matt (Szeto) shows up Scotty gets a wild idea. Somewhere up in Canada is a brothel that specializes in “taking care” of those that have a disability. When they hire a medical courier driven by Sam (Gabourey Sidibe) the adventure is now officially on.

What We Think: It’s a sort of okay movie. One that struggles for its laughs and sometimes has to reach too far in. Rosenmeyer is sort of annoying and it isn’t in an endearing way. It has this sort of The Intouchables or The Upside sort of vibe. Isn’t half the film the former is and only about as good as the latter. So much of this relies on actors who aren’t disabled playing the roles. I sort of had a problem with that. If The Peanut Butter Falcon has taught us anything it is that these actors (those with disabilities) can make absolutely incredible stuff. So….why aren’t we letting them?

Our Grade: C-, This really had some promise but it is completely let down by the script and the too-easy actions of the characters. That is such a problem. If you want something very meh, something that perhaps will be funny to you (even if I don’t like it) give this one a shot. If not then you’re like me and it just isn’t really worth it. Very mediocre and not what I expected from Richard Wong. His previous film was actually pretty good. This is for sure not where that one was. This is just a bit too meh and a waste of Gabourey Sidibe.
