Title: Sonic the Hedgehog
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Jeff Fowler
Starring: Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey
Runtime: 1 hr 39 mins
What It Is: Sonic (Schwartz) is a hedgehog from a distant planet who’s landed in Green Hills, Montana. Their sheriff is Tom Wachowski (Marsden) a generational lawman whose family has protected the city for a few generations now. When Sonic causes a blackout of the entire Pacific Northwest the government calls in Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Carrey) to research the blackout and find its source. When the small-town sheriff finds Sonic the two quickly turn into Thelma and Louise as they attempt to outsmart and outrun the evil doctor.
What We Think: What a blast! That’s what this is. A complete and utter blast. It’s 99 mins just fly by (no pun intended). Sonic looks amazing (now) and doesn’t seem out of the world he’s in. Jim Carrey seems to be having an absolute blast as the villain in this story. This is Carrey at his hilariously unhinged. I love the story even if it takes a few…I guess you could say easy turns. Those easy turns make it simple for the audience to settle in even if you’ve never had the pleasure of running full speed through the Green Hill Zone or (closer to our hearts) Casino Night Zone. If you have there are really great little easter eggs strewn throughout. This might be the best video game film ever made. Sorry, Mortal Kombat you’ve been dethroned by the Blue Blur himself.
Our Grade: B, Well this is…unexpected. I had almost no expectations this was actually going to be good. I am ecstatic to report this is super fun, funny and made with a metric ton of heart and love for the source material. Every little detail about the character is taken into account. They even formulate some interesting character flaws in him he never had before. I highly recommend you and your entire family go check this one. It’s a dang good time at the movies. One that like the erinaceinaen hero of this story seems to fly right on by.
