Title: El Camino: A Break Bad Movie
MPAA Rating: TV-MA
Director: Vince Gilligan
Starring: Aaron Paul, Jonathan Banks, Matt Jones
Runtime: 2 hrs 2 mins
What It Is: Following the events of one of televisions biggest and most iconic series finales we have a spooked out and nervous Jesse Pinkman (Paul). We fill in the gaps of what happened to Pinkman during his kidnapping in that last season. Now it’s the aftermath and you wonder just how Pinkman will live to see another day as he is the number one suspect in the gang shootout that led to the death of Walter White (Brian Cranston) among others.
What We Think: This is Aaron Paul’s show. He’s is a giant conquering every scene he’s in with the same panache that won him 3 Emmy’s. This film works both as a filler of gaps and an expansion of its story. There are little easter eggs hidden in this for fans of the television series. This is more than just what it was intended to be. It is a stellar crime thriller. One that in any other circumstance would’ve probably ended up on many year-end lists. Aaron Paul needs to be in more stuff.
Our Grade: B+, An excellent film that works against the tradition of films based on television not being any good. Since this one is easy enough to check out (it’s on Netflix) it really helps move this into B+ territory. You don’t have to have seen the show to enjoy this film. Check this one out its a real treat and a genuine surprise that shows that Vince Gilligan understands fully the word he created on the small screen so long ago. Not one beat gets missed. Not a step with Pinkman feels out of place. A huge recommendation for this one.
