Title: Steven Universe: The Movie
MPAA Rating: TV-PG
Director: Rebecca Sugar
Starring: Zach Callison, Estelle, Michaela Dietz
Runtime: 1 hr 22 mins
What It Is: Following the events of the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe (Callison) and taking place in the near future this movie sees Steven and his gems friends Pearl (Deedee Mago), Amethyst (Dietz) and Garnet (Estelle) they will fight an enemy in Spinel (Sarah Stiles) that is both unpredictable and without a plan. Meanwhile after Spinel resets the Crystal Gems, and she subsequently gets reset herself Steven must also try to bring his friends back from their original form resets.
What We Think: This just continues the cartoon series fantastic (and inclusive) storytelling. All of our beloved characters are here and they’re more or less unchanged from where the show left them. As with anything Rebecca Sugar, the music is the centerpiece and this has some fantastic tunes in it. If you’re going to make a fusion with Greg and Steven who better then the amazing leader of The Pharmacists, Ted Leo. On top of that the cast, Callison especially continues to just bring these tunes and characters wonderfully to life. The narrative is a bit thin and wears on as we surpass the hour mark but it does a nice job of never feeling too long.
Our Grade: B+, I’m sad to see such a game-changing piece of animated entertainment end. This is a fitting end one of the best animated shows of all time. Its indelible mark like that of Adventure Time will be felt as time will look favorably on this show that flung the diversity and inclusion door wide open. I did not know what to expect from this. Would it pervert what already was? I didn’t know and I’m glad to say it did not. I can for sure recommend this one! It’s great.
