What It Is: When Marianne (Casta) reveals to her long-time boyfriend Abel (Garrel) that she is leaving him for his best friend he is crushed. He is however uncertain how what to do. So he moves on. Nine years later his friend has died leaving Marianne behind as well as a few other things. When secrets and revelations are undercovered Abel’s entire life might see a few changes. The question is is he ready for them?
What We Think: While its story unfolds quickly and with a breeze, there’s a bit of a rush through it all. I mean the whole thing is only 75 mins. With everything that takes place here, I think everything is a bit too rushed. The acting is pretty stellar and I was particularly impressed with Lily-Rose Depp. She’s actually phenomenal. I enjoyed the script and I think Garrel did a really nice job directing this. From a character standpoint, I enjoyed Abel’s angle even if his arc felt a bit rushed as I mentioned. Overall this is a really surprising film in terms of quality.
Our Grade: B-, This is my first exposure to Garrell but it has me interested to check out his earlier film Two Friends. Another film in which he characters a guy named Abel. This one is worth your time. It does come off as a bit…well…French but I mean that is the films native language and so those sensibilities make sense. If that really isn’t your bag…I get it. If you’re willing to give it a shot it’s an easy-breezy watch. It is also a very pretty looking film, which is something that totally threw me. I wasn’t expecting that at all. Check it out!
