Title: In Reality
Rating: N/A
Director: Ann Lupo
Starring: Ann Lupo, Miles G. Jackson, Kimiko Glenn
Runtime: 1h 35m
What is it: A young filmmaker named Ann (Lupo) becomes consumed by the fantasy of finding true love. Just when she thinks she’s found it, she gets friend zoned. The disappointment of rejection sends her into a downward spiral that tests the limits of her sanity.
What we think: Funny and in a lot of ways a bit too relatable for women and men who are notorious for being put in “the friend zone”. This film showcases situations which I’m sure many have been through. You meet someone who appears to be “the right one”, you start to fall for them despite trying not to but you still end up falling in love and maybe fantasizing about spending your life with them. Then before you know it, you are put in “the friend zone”. Your dreams are crushed, your heart is broken, and a part of you may even hate having had met them in the first place. Then your mind goes through the ‘what went wrong?’ phase. Ah, Love. Isn’t it grand? What I love is how humor was woven into scenes which would be considered self-deprecating. Something which I know I have done several times in my life. However, an aspect about this film I appreciated was how it included scenario’s which every woman and I can only assume every man has done at some point in their lives before or even after heartbreak like constantly obsessing about our faults, insecurities, and what’s supposedly “wrong with us” and why we are still single. Unlike many films I’ve seen, this film included a very specific scene to demonstrate how to break from that toxic cycle and move onto self-love.
Our grade: A, This film is a very cute, kind of weird, but a funny film which many can relate to. You have the main character struggling to find love who has some self-esteem issues who is dealing with something fairly common and attacks it in better ways than most would and no, I’m shockingly not talking about therapy. Definitely, a film which I would recommend to anyone who has ever been in “the friend zone” or anyone needing a good laugh.
