Title: Crown Vic
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Joel Souza
Starring: Thomas Jane, Luke Kleintank, Scottie Thompson
Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins
What It Is: Nick Holland (Kleintank) is a rookie who’s just joined the force. He’s partnered with 20-year veteran Ray Mandel (Jane) to learn the ropes. What these two get is an insane night filled with absolute craziness. From out of control fellow cops to out of control citizens. It is their job to try and maintain peace and justice regardless. To protect and serve in spite of the lunacy occurring all around the city.
What We Think: This is a very good cop drama. It has a necessary grit to it without falling into the overly violent gray area cop dramas can sometimes fall into. This runs very similarly to the Michael Pena/Jake Gyllenhaal piece End of Watch right down to taking place in Los Angeles. It’s really interesting how good the night time cinematography looks. Director Joel Souza does a really fantastic job here. This is his biggest picture yet. Luckily for him, and all of us Souza knocks it out of the park. It isn’t perfect, no, certain narrative strands are a bit loose. These strands just don’t connect, and that’s the best thing I can complain about.
Our Grade: B, This is for sure one to see. No matter who you are or what your taste this film hits it. Like cop dramas? Cool, it’s got that. Wacky characters? It’s there. For some insight into the process of how the film was made and the experience on set check out our interview with actress Scottie Thompson. Its that video below. Share it around. While you’re at it there’s a ton of fantastic film coming out of Tribeca this year. Look out for it when it hits theaters. You will not be disappointed.
