Title: Slut in a Good Way
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Sophie Lorain
Starring: Marguerite Bouchard, Romane Denis, Rose Adam
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: Charlotte (Bouchard) is a young woman who’s just experienced her first heartbreak. Now she’s relying on her friends Mégane (Denis) and Aube (Adam). They themselves offering different perspectives on the game of love. Mégane, more cynical and Aube’s more romantic in nature. When the three start a new job at a toy shop an exploration of their blossoming sexuality leaves them asking questions. Wondering what love, lust, and life are truly all about. They’ll try to navigate it all…while having a little fun.
What We Think: Black and white as a decision works for some movies and for others you ask…why? This is a case of the latter. This easily could’ve been colorized. Narratively I liked this. The story told is done well and the acting is decent…there were spots for improvement. It’s an inexperienced cast overall. They are really good though. I’m of the belief that Sophie Lorain will make more films that tell stories important to women. Unique experiences that I, as a man, can’t exactly relate to. It’s okay that I can’t because some of the themes are universal.
Our Grade: C+, I like the film I just really didn’t love it. It has several issues and I loved most of the narrative. Its message was good but often time it got too jumbled and lost. I don’t like the choice of Black and White for the sake of it. Overall I can give the film our seal of approval but only just barely. This is certainly one that young woman and girls will appreciate for its openness in discussions of sexuality. Anything that shines a light on such a (formerly) taboo topic is one I’m going to endorse for sure.
